Technology continues to take the world by storm. A businesses digital transformation is one of the key points to ensuring its prosperity in this ever evolving and competetive business climate. It doesn´t matter if you´re a small, medium or large company the use of innovative applications will boost your sales possibilites, number of loyal customers and conversion rates.

However, it´s not as easy as implementing any technology at any given time. The right technology could be implemented wrongly, or it could be the right technology but it fails to address the specefic business need. It mustn´t be forgotten that, although technology will always help develop your projects, a humans point of view and the problem at hand always come first. Companies have to remember that technology is always evolving. It takes a long time to implement it into a company and by the time it´s implemented, it may have already become obsolete and the product won´t be able to be sold to the market.

What can we do?

Resolve exisiting problems. A common pitfall that companies encounter is that they decide to rush into implementing new systems before having resolved previous issues. Many companies jump the gun and choose certain technology before having even determined or analysed the problem and what the best solution would be. To get the best value out of technology you must understand what the business need is and how technology can answer to it.

Find a balance. Find a balance between being human and using technology as a way of advancement. As humans, we have the capacity to create things. However, remember that without a previous analysis and measurement process, humans decisions can lead to an unrecoverable loss of resources.

One size doesn’t fit all. Not every company requieres large technological implementations. Smaller organizations can easily benefit from small implementations which require less training and control. Bigger implementations need more levels of understanding and management. Training can be costly and planning and coordination can be complicated.

Allign technology with strategy. It´s important businesses look at their strategy before implementing technology, and see if it will help them achieve their goals. Implementing technology aims at improving performance. The first step should be looking at the objectives you wish to achieve and work backwords, finding a technology that best suits performance.

Communication and transition. Communication is key. Help your employees understand the benefits this new technology will bring, and create excitement and motivation for their understanding. Companies want to help automate strenuous tasks and help employees save time and be more flexible. Some employees however, don´t like change. Determine what the potential impacts will be and help them overcome them. Start simply and ease them in.

Work from the ground up. Start from the most basic level, ask yourself; what are the issues at hand and how is this new technology expected to improve them and how will we measure and analyse its success. Don´t let the pressure get to you and cause you to rush into things. Don´t make quick decisions and implement technology poorly. Get your priorities straight; what are the most important things for your company?

Technology can be your alliance, but if used incorrectly, it can also be your enemy. That´s why it´s important you resolve these points before embarking on any kind of project, and in doing so you can never go wrong.
